Found two cars on an estate sale site. It’s hard to believe that they’d belong to the same person.
The current bid on the Mustang, which allegedly has a $30K paint job, is a little over $3K. The 1978 Scirocco, which apparently had been in storage since 1979, is currently just over $1K.
Despite the work necessary to get it back on the road, I know which one I’d take...

Hell yeah. I’ve wanted one of those since I was just a kid, riding around in mom’s Dasher wagon, the vehicle that became my first car. I was all set to buy a Scirocco, but then the GTI came out and I got one of those instead. It was incredibly fun, but poorly built and unreliable, and it made me wish I bought the ‘Roc instead.

If ever a car could make a case for another CashforClunkers travesty - it’s that Mustang.

Because of its wider body the Scirocco is the easiest mk1 VW ro swap a modern drive tr ain into. There’s also something about it’s axles having the same number of splines, or diameter as mk4-5 VWs. I don’t remember. Point is if you wanted A ALH, or VR6 or even a 2.5 in this I think it would be “ nearly” bolt on.

That Mustang kind of makes me want to become the winning bidder so that I could destroy it, but then I realize that the same money could be better used to buy the Scirocco and restore it.
On the bright side, it’s highly unlikely that the Mustang will actually be seen on the roads.

2.5, as in the I5? That’s the kind of unconventional thinking I could support.

That certainly is a one-of-a-kind paint job. Primarily because the guy who painted it threw himself of a cliff afterwards due to the shame of what he had done.

Nah - just the opposite. He was laughing all the way to the bank, $30K richer, looking for some other poor sucker to fleece.

Yup, I love that engine it’s the closest you can get to a bmw 6 cylinder engine in a FWD car.
Just so smooth and torquey, it was paired with a really nice transmission too. I only drive one once but I was really impressed by it. Of course that was in like 2009

A friend of mine had one in his 2013 (I think) Passat. Quite a nice powertrain and more than sufficient to haul around that big sedan , but I would like to experience it in a car about half a ton lighter. I like the idea of the VR6, but I’m thinking that it’s just too heavy.
